AI for small law firms, without the part that worries you.
The repetitive work around a matter is not the matter. Intake, document chasing, status updates, and file setup can be drafted for review, in the systems your firm already uses.
Where this fits
Owner-led firms of roughly five to fifteen people, one dominant practice area, and nobody whose job is operations or technology. Small enough that the managing partner decides, busy enough that the administrative load is real.
-
Estate planning and elder law
Structured intake, predictable document lists, and a client journey that repeats. Usually flat fee, so time saved is margin rather than lost billing.
How this works for your firm -
Personal injury
Intake speed decides who signs, and records chasing never ends. Contingency billing means time saved is capacity for another matter at the same fee, not lost billing.
How this works for your firm -
Immigration
The most repeatable paperwork in law: the same checklists, the same document requests, the same status questions, at volume. Judgement stays with the attorney.
How this works for your firm
Not on this list? The administrative work around a matter looks similar across most practices, so get in touch anyway and Stephen will tell you plainly whether it is worth it. Either way, start with the questions to ask any AI vendor before client information touches it.
Three things worth saying up front
- You probably do not need on-premises AI. ABA Formal Opinion 512 never mentions it, and NC 2024 Formal Ethics Opinion 1 permits providing client information to a third-party AI vendor where the lawyer has satisfied herself it is sufficiently secure. It is a configuration and contract question. A private deployment is available if you want one.
- Stephen is not a lawyer and gives no ethics advice. He does the technical work underneath your obligations: reading what a vendor retains, configuring tools to match the rules your firm sets, and training your team. Engaging him does not make your firm compliant or satisfy any duty. Those stay yours.
- Nothing goes out on its own. Every workflow produces a draft that a person reviews. No client is contacted on your behalf.
